More Positive Social Interaction May Be What’s Needed

Oftentimes, we seem to do one of two things: (1) go our own way, work by ourselves, go home, and live on our own, or (2) experience disagreements with others, quarrel, and/or get things done vengefully. Yet, we all have similar, overarching goals: being happy, enjoying our lives, having friends and a (supportive) family, increasing productivity.

When was the last time we all tried to go out, break the ice, and have positive, meaningful interactions with others? If we all want to achieve our goals, we don’t just need more social interaction—we need more positive social interaction. Here are a few ideas to get there:

1. At least once a week, set aside a time where you meet a certain number of new people.

Margaret Heffernan, an international businesswoman, business writer, TED speaker, and interviewer, noticed that many people in her first software company didn’t even know about the person sitting next to them because they were all focusing on their own work and tasks. She said to TED bloggers Juliet Blake and Kate Torgovnick May here that she decided “Friday afternoons at 4 o’clock everybody’s going to get together and three people are going to stand up and tell us who they are and what matters to them.”

As we get to know each other and interact with each other, we may find that we’re not only meeting new people and knowing those who surround us, we can also feel happier with new social connections that we make, and increased happiness may help increase our productivity.

2. Surround yourself with people who make you happy.

This may seem somewhat obvious, but really, pay attention to who you spend time with. Make sure that you’re not spending time with people who spread negative vibes or don’t make you feel good. You’ll end up spending energy on what doesn’t make you happy, contrary to what you’re trying to do.

Spending time with positive people and others who make you happy will help you feel happier and achieve your goal. If you don’t have anyone to spend time with, don’t go back to those with negative vibes just because you’re alone. Use that time to find more positive people.

3. Spread positive vibes yourself.

As you seek positive people, remember to be positive yourself—it’ll give people a reason to spend time with you. Just like you want to be with people who want to make you happy, others want to be with people who make them happy, too. Be someone people would enjoy being around.

Whether you’re at work, home, school, or anywhere else, positive social interactions are necessary for us to be happy, enjoy our lives, have friends and a supportive family, and increase productivity.
